Real estate agents help their clients buy, sell and rent properties. Agents are responsible for obtaining their own clients by working daily to create leads and track them. Agents are also responsible for managing their client’s transaction from contract to close.

A career in real estate can be very rewarding with unlimited income potential. This career will also offer you independence and flexibility with your schedule. You should be a self-starter who is able to motivate yourself. 

One disadvantage: because real estate agents are paid by commission, regular paychecks aren’t guaranteed. It should also be noted that real estate agents are independent contractors who have to provide their own health care, retirement and other benefits.

Qualities needed:

Organized – There are a lot of important contracts and dates that must be adhered to. An agent must have strong organizational skills to complete these tasks successfully.

Self-motivated – Because Real Estate Agents are independent contractors they are responsible for their own daily activities. Without self-motivation, your days and weeks can slip away without being productive. No production means no pay, and no pay means you are out of business. 

Ethical – Clients are entrusting Real Estate Agents with the largest investment of their life. Clients expect an agent who is honest and trustworthy.

Good communication – Real estate agents need to maintain good communication throughout a real estate transaction. Agents communicate with clients, banks, home inspectors, attorneys and others. Sometimes emotions can be stressful, so good communication skills are a key factor to getting the job done.
